What makes one school better than the other?
What makes any learning environment better than any other? The teacher! Martial arts styles aside, even “bad” martial arts can be fun and rewarding if taught by a “good” instructor. The main thing to look at is the focus of the instructor.
For some reason, martial arts on the whole have the propensity to attract less than reputable people. What I mean is a Dojo (school) should be about the student not the instructor! Many schools are quite frankly a little unsettling when it comes to how you are to “submit your will” to the Master or Sensei. Some schools require their students to wash the Sensei’s car; the dojo, to act as if it were the 1400’s and they were the personal servants.
In some ways the “Power” of “Sensei” goes to their heads as they form little cult like environments where nothing is ever questioned! As a student you should have the right to ask questions! As an adult you should never have to do push-ups for “offending” sensei. You are what the school is about, not the teachers ego!
You will be able to tell very quickly what kind of Dojo our school is. The adult class is taught in a
relaxed manor. Questions are welcomed by Sensei because he has the experience and the knowledge to not be intimidated by the prospects
of not knowing the answer. Adult students do not “get in trouble” we all train together! We are a family. At our school it really
is about the student!
